Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?
I consider myself to be a very proactive individual who is always looking to support or improve a product or service. I found mainstream education to be very limiting and felt better suited in a working enviornment. The combined experience of earning while learning which an apprenticeship provided me was much more appealing than university, and most importantly i could qualify for free!
Please describe your experience
My experience as an apprentice was very positive and taught me a lot about the world and how business operates. Aside from general business skills, the apprenticeship programme supported me in becoming a confident individual. I have been provided an opportunity to make a real difference in the world of public sector which previously wouldn’t have been achievable if it wasn’t for the opportunity an apprenticeship provided me.
How has your apprenticeship helped you progress in your career?
My apprenticeship has secured me a job in local government working with economic development. I work alongside a variety of professionals and continue to promote the message of apprenticeships both in my business and through my personal network.
What do you feel are the advantages of doing an apprenticeship over other training or education?
Apprenticeships provide a pathway into work, and in some cases, careers which previously would have been unattainable without acquiring a degree.
It’s so important for individuals to understand their strengths and weaknesses in both education and work and learn which pathway is best for their journey. University is not the only pathway to a career, and i personally work alongside graduates who are in the same job with the same salary as i, a former apprentice.
