Hi everyone! I’m Sophie Scott, and I’m so pleased to be taking on the role of Vice Apprentice Chair for the South East and getting to work more closely with you all. I’d like to start by saying thank you to Chris, Elizabeth, Phil and Ellie for their support so far and the amazing job they do.

I first joined the AAN towards the start of my apprenticeship, which is a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship at Mercedes-Benz UK, for which I’m now in my final year. I joined because, like many other ambassadors in the network, I didn’t feel apprenticeships were made clear as an option to me at school, and I wanted to showcase what a great opportunity they are to more students. Before doing my apprenticeship, I went to Loughborough University – only to realise it wasn’t for me when I got there. I ended up dropping out to pursue an apprenticeship, which was absolutely the right decision for me, but it made me realise how little I knew about them while I was in sixth form making such important decisions. Now, I love using this story to share my perspective of both the traditional university route and the exciting apprenticeship options when speaking at schools and sixth forms, hopefully encouraging others to realise apprenticeships are a strong career move.

I was lucky to be involved in planning this year’s annual AAN conference, which is what sparked my interest in the broader strategy of the AAN. Shortly after, I applied for the role of Vice Apprentice Chair for the South East because I wanted to stay involved in growing the network and supporting the amazing ambassadors who make it all possible. I think the AAN has done a lot for me in my apprenticeship journey – improving my public speaking skills, meeting like-minded apprentices, and attending inspiring events – so I’m looking forward to giving back and helping others get the same out of it.

To start with, I’m looking forward to getting to know the South East ambassadors better and hearing your feedback and suggestions, so please do reach out! I’m also excited about the upcoming training videos project, as I think this will really help support new ambassadors when they join the network.
