TELL US HOW YOU FIRST BECAME AN APPRENTICE:
I was unsure about university due to the cost and debt associated with it. At the time my school mainly pushed for university so it was up to me to look into apprenticeships. I liked the idea of apprenticeships due to the hands-on learning approach and so I looked into degree apprenticeships. I applied to a few which were not successful so I took on a job in the meantime whilst I continued to look. I then came across an Indeed advert for a degree apprenticeship not far from where I lived at RDT to which I applied. I got through the first stage where I had a phone interview, followed by a more technical phone interview asking about IT related things and coding I had done or willing to learn. This prompted me to be selected for RDT’s apprenticeship day where the top 10 candidates were invited to the office and we took part in different activities which were judged on. Not long after getting home I received a call to say I had been offered the role an that’s how I got to where I am today!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT APPRENTICESHIP ROLE:
I have just finished my degree apprenticeship and work as a Software Engineer. I work with multiple coding languages each day whilst working with my fellow team members on an array of technologies – including UI, APIs, SQL and other backend code for RDT’s various products. Recently, I started mentoring our newest apprentice and it seems to be going well.
TELL US WHY YOU WANTED TO BECOME AN APPRENTICE AMBASSADOR:
I wanted to become an apprentice ambassador as I am so grateful for my apprenticeship journey I have been on – it’s been hard work but very much worth it in the end to get the vital years of work experience (and alongside a degree in my case). I would like to tell others my story and help them find apprenticeships and have good experiences like I have had. Additionally, I would like to help women get apprenticeships in the tech industry and promote women in tech too.
