TELL US HOW YOU FIRST BECAME AN APPRENTICE:
I wanted to do an apprenticeship over going to university to become a nurse as I learn better with hands on experience. I wanted to be able to be making an income for myself so that I can be able to afford doing the degree. As part of my education journey I studied the health and nursing T-level at Southdown. As part of the T-level as completed 320 hours of placement. Unfortunately due to the trust merging with another trust they were unable to offer me an apprenticeship like they had hoped. However I didn’t let that discourage me. I searched every trust within driving distance of me. I was unsuccessful until I found my current apprenticeship. I am just in my first weeks of my apprenticeship and I am loving it so far.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT APPRENTICESHIP ROLE:
In my current role I am working as a Health care support (HCA) and attend university three days a week. I am in an acute setting on a day ward. I am the only HCA when I am on shift and work every closely with the nurses. This is a great help with my apprenticeship as they discuss clinical skills with me that I will eventually learn. For my day to day activities I clean the bed spaces once patients have moved; assist patients with moving, eating, getting dressed; taking prescriptions to the pharmacy; getting blood from the blood bank and lots more.
TELL US WHY YOU WANTED TO BECOME AN APPRENTICE AMBASSADOR:
I definitely believe that this is the right decision for me to join the network as I want to be able to empower more people into healthcare apprenticeships I wasn’t really given much information about apprenticeships so I want to be the person to be able to empower more people to become a nurse through non traditional routes.
