Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?
I had to leave a full time health and Social care course at college due to ill health. However I had done some volunteering at my local hospital and really enjoyed it so decided to apply for a healthcare Apprenticeship there.
it was absolutely the right decision for me. I enjoyed the fact I was earning a salary and enjoying other benefits of being an employee- eg having a contract of employment with paid holidays. It was also good to be part of a team working together to support patients.
Please describe your experience
I completed My Apprenticeship in 13 months.
Every month I would be visited by my Assessor in the workplace. She would assess my clinical competence, check my theoretical understanding, provide me with feedback on assignments I had written and set me new targets.
How has your Apprenticeship helped you progress in your career?
Since achieving my Apprenticeship I applied for and was accepted for employment at the SAME hospital in a part time role and also as a member of the bank staff.
Achieving my L2 Apprenticeship has enabled me to Apply for an Access to HE course (Nursing). This is a 9 month programme which, when I have achieved it, will enable me to apply for an Adult Nursing Degree or Nursing DEGREE Apprenticeship.
Choosing an Apprenticeship has enabled me to earn and learn at the same time and increased my career prospects without having to take on a hefty student loan. I will have to contribute financially towards my Access to HE Course But this will be refunded once I complete THE degree/DEGREE Apprenticeship.
What do you feel are the advantages of doing an apprenticeship over other training or education?
I found that an Apprenticeship really suited my style of learning as I have benefitted from being supported on a 1:1 basis in the workplace rather than as part of a group on a Full time course in a classroom setting 3 days a week.
I have also appreciated being part of a real work environment as I have learnt so much more by being trained on the job.
