I am the Head Biomedical Scientist working in the pathology laboratories. We are the hidden workforce that analyse samples for disease and monitor diseases. My specialist interest relates to diseases diagnosed using blood. However pathology is comprised of disciplines that diagnose haematological and biochemical disease. We provide compatible blood and blood products for transfusion. We screen and advise on medicines for infection, and are involved with all cancer diagnosis.
Health care scientists are involved with 80% of patient diagnosis and compromise 5% of the NHS workforce. The NHS is the largest employer of scientists in the UK, and we have careers in physics, engineering and life sciences.
